Successful grant proposals are about much more than just writing. The Grantsmanship Center training helps organizations focus on program planning, developing logical and compelling proposals, mastering powerful research tools, and building partnerships to increase impact.
Training participants learn how to find funders who are most likely to support their work. And then, after clear-eyed analysis of their programs, participants learn how to explain exactly what they plan to do to make stronger, more vibrant communities.
Well-organized applications, using solid data combined with inspiring narrative, submitted to well-selected grantmakers, have the best chance of success. This comprehensive approach is at the heart of The Grantsmanship Center’s proven training.
A limited number of full scholarships are available for The Grantsmanship Center's
Grantsmanship Training Program - Online (5-day), Essential Grant Skills - Online (2-day)
& Grant Management Essentials - Online(2-day)
- Scholarships available to staff members of established Mid-Hudson Valley-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations
- Training programs are appropriate for executive and related staff responsible for grant, program, and/or resource development administration and management
- Scholarship participants must commit to complete the full course
- Priority consideration will be given to human service organizations
- Limit of one scholarship per organization
- Scholarship participants must purchase the required Grantsmanship: Program Planning & Proposal Writing textbook, at a total cost of approx. $60 (includes textbook and shipping fees)
- Scholarship support is anticipated to be available through 2023
To request scholarship consideration, please contact Jennifer Killian, Program Officer. In your email, please include your name, title, organization, training selection/date details, and a note committing to attend all online sessions and to complete the exercises and work required between the online sessions. Please DO NOT register prior to scholarship approval — registration instructions will be sent once approved.
Early-bird registration is strongly encouraged to maximize scholarship availability. Please allow time for scholarship consideration in advance of early-bird registration (registration required 30-days prior to the program start date).
Grantsmanship Training Program - Online (5-Day)
The Grantsmanship Center’s acclaimed Grantsmanship Training Program - Online is an immersive experience delivered virtually, live over 5 days with eight learning events to help participants find new ways to tell their organization’s story, and complete the course with a draft proposal.
During this training, participants research actual funding sources (government, private, and corporate) for their programs using the GrantStation database. Participants leave the program with a list of appropriate funders and the skills to research funders independently. Participants also learn to identify and create the eight components of a successful proposal by using the Center's model for their own organization or project. Then, working in small teams, participants create real grant proposals for their own or a teammate's organization.
Once proposals are completed, the trainer leads constructive and supportive proposal reviews helping participants understand how a funder will view their work. Participants complete this training with tangible work product, including their own workbook as well as copies of all of the proposals drafted and reviewed in class.

Essential Grant Skills - Online (2-Day)
The Grantsmanship Center’s Essential Grant Skills - Online training is a distilled version of the 5-day Grantsmanship Training Program, covering the same core content, also delivered in an interactive format, but the shorter timeframe means there are fewer applications of the concepts. Participants draft essential sections of a grant proposal for their own organization or project using The Grantsmanship Center's Model. The e-notebook is loaded with resources and complements the class textbook, Grantsmanship: Program Planning & Proposal Writing. Delivery combines presentation, discussion, and exercises for lively, meaningful learning. Participants also take away tangible work product including the workbook used during class for their own project.
This training offers an understanding of key concepts for those new to the field and an opportunity to enhance skills for more experienced grant developers.

Grant Management Essentials - Online (2-Day)
The Grantsmanship Center’s Grant Management Essentials - Online training is a two-day grant management workshop in which participants get the skills and know-how to keep their projects on track, comply with grant regulations, and protect their organizations from the administrative and legal chaos that results from poor grants management.
Beyond just presentation and discussion, participants engage in hands-on grant management exercises and review their work in class to learn the most current, practical information in the field. Participants also receive an e-notebook richly filled with resources.

Training Delivery
Trainings are currently offered via Zoom, delivered in a convenient, engaging, and lively virtual format. The technical aspects of the online sessions are managed by a dedicated class facilitator, ensuring the trainer can focus fully on the class and content.

Ohio Commission on Minority Health is pleased to partner with The Grantsmanship Center to offer this energetic, highly experiential training.
Grantmakers focus their investments on results and long-term impact, so it’s up to organizations to design approaches that meet their residents' needs and then document the positive changes resulting from those approaches. This 2-day workshop covers the major aspects of developing effective programs that will inspire support. This training is focused on program planning rather than writing proposals.
Created specifically for virtual delivery, this training combines online presentations, discussions, and exercises with offline reading and practical applications. You won't be tempted to check email because you'll be too engaged with colleagues also eager to make better communities. We know bodies can't sit too long at a screen so online sessions are limited to 2 hours with a break at the mid-point. You get the convenience of virtual plus the delight of personal interaction.

You'll also learn how to identify and then create the 8 components of a successful proposal by using the Center's model for your own organization or project. Next, working in small teams, you'll develop real grant proposals for your own or a teammate's organization.
Once proposals are drafted, your trainer will lead constructive and supportive proposal reviews helping the class to understand how a funder will view their work. When you leave this training, you'll have tangible work product, including your own workbook as well as copies of all of the proposals drafted and reviewed in class.

What's the Cost?
The standard fee for this total training package which includes all training materials, 5 exciting days of in-person training from an expert, and follow-up services, is $1,519 per person, but thanks to generous underwriting by sponsors, those who are approved to participate will pay only $500 per person. Participants must commit to participating for all five days because parts of the training build upon one another, so substitutions are not allowed for individual segments.
Does Your Organization Qualify?
If your organization is a 501(c)(3) charity, providing services to residents in the Greater Baton Rouge area, with an annual budget of $750,000 of less, you may submit an application. You'll be notified of acceptance after applications are reviewed by the sponsors. Class size is limited to 30 participants.

This training is customized for East West Center staff who have a variety of experience levels and work in a range of departments (i.e., Arts, Communication & External Relations, Education, Professional Development, Research, Seminars).
Participants will learn how to take advantage of diverse funding opportunities. The training will focus on proposal development for government funders (primarily U.S. but also foreign governments) with some additional attention on foundation funders, especially in the areas of arts, culture, and humanities.
